We arrived at Coroico, not knowing what was going to become of us. The so called ROAD OF DEATH was at first the only way to get there, but now a new paved and extremely beautiful and "safer" road takes you straight to the town where living life in the clouds is a normal day to day thing. Coroico is at 1800m above sea level, so living at this altitude just gives you the most amazing views of the Yungas region.
At first, we thought that finding work here would be easy. But easier said than done. We talked to a long list of hostels and local businesses but all of them gave us the classic: "I need to talk to my husband, the boss isn't here, leave me your card, maybe after Christmas" …

Hotel Esmeralda was one of those places we saw by chance. On the way to the Uchumachi peak with it's 360º view point, the hotel sits on the side of the mountain with the most glorious of views of Coroico and the valley. In fact we didn't know it even existed until we got our backsides up there. Considering we were all the way there, we had nothing to loose, so we decided to ask if they needed anything. Martha after taking a look at some of the things we had created on the road, didn't take too long to give us the "yes" we were looking for. Considering that the building was lost in the middle of the route to the Uchumachi mountain, her main concern was to inform her potential clients where the hotel was situated. She also showed us her old web site, which we recommended her to redo from scratch as the site itself didn't communicate the real potential of the business. But you know client's stubbornness, she wanted the signage for her clients. We explained to her how we charged our clients. When she heard the word barter her face lit up and she quickly offer us a double room with private bathroom, along with breakfast (buffet style), lunch and dinner. we could only think: "YES!"

Once we started to think up what would be best for the business, we decided that she needed to differentiate herself from the rest of the high end hotels. A simple and efficient way was to use a different material for the signs. All of the hotels and hostels use wood to create their signage, so we opted to use a slate board, something that would be different and at the same time more elegant.
For this project we teamed up with Cui, one of the two artisans who creates all the wooden signs in the village. With his help we were able to buy a fine piece of dark slate and answer all our doubts related to creating, cutting and painting the signs. He was extremely helpful even considering we were steeling a potential client.
¿Eficaz?
In the drawing board, we decided to maintain the corporate identity the hotel had in the front door. This way, we wouldn't create confusion and could maintain a coherent image. Our work would consist of: 2 signs (one for the entrance of the village and the second in a crucial point to get there), 2 banners printed on canvas (one of them would be placed in the outside of relatives shop in a strategic point in the village and the other one in the hotel itself) and a little ad for the newspaper announcing new years eve. So after squeezing the creative juice from our brains and using the pool and sauna facilities, this is the final outcome of it all.
