AL RICO TRUEQUE - BARTERING SUCCULENCE

Le habíamos ofrecido nuestros servicios a Janice, manager de The Log Cabin en Sagada, una cocinera excepcional y una increíble persona (no es peloteo, realmente se portó con nosotros como nadie hasta el momento). Janice estaba encantada con la idea de usar el trueque. De hecho, después de terminar nuestro trabajo en St Joseph Resthouse, nos propuso quedarnos en su casa para acabar de diseñar su logo y hacerle la página web del restaurante. Dormir y comer en The Log Cabin fue una maravilla. Su comida fue de lo mejor que probamos en Filipinas, y la habitación que nos proporcionó, la cual se encontraba encima del restaurante, fue de una calidad espectacular, propia de un hotel de 5 estrellas. La habitación era más grande que nuestro piso de Barcelona y fue el mejor cuarto del viaje. Así es la hospitalidad filipina. Sus palabras literales fueron: "se que vuestro trabajo es realmente importante, y por eso os merecéis esto". Estábamos anonadados, pero lo que no sabíamos es que esta no sería la última sorpresa.

We had offered our services to Janice, the manager of The Log Cabin Sagada, a great chef and above all an amazing person. She was delighted with the idea of using trade, in fact after we finished our job in St Joe's, we were invited to come at The Log Cabin's home stay not to finish their logo, but to create their website as well. Sleeping and eating in The Log Cabin was an amazing experience. Their food was by far the best we've ate in the Philippines, while their home stay above the restaurant was 5 star quality. To be honest, the room they had given us was even larger that our flat in Barcelona and probably the best room we've come across in the whole trip so far. This goes to show how Philippine Hospitality works out. We were left speechless. But this wasn't going to be the last time either.

Lógicamente, teniendo en cuenta cómo se estaban portando con nosotros, queríamos darles lo mejor de nuestro trabajo (teniendo en cuenta los escasos medios que teníamos a nuestro alcance). Así que decidimos, no solo diseñarles el logo y la web, sino trabajar lo mejor que pudiéramos la fotografía de sus productos y añadir materiales extras. 

Fue un placer trabajar con Janice y su familia. Les comentamos nuestras ideas, y ellos contribuyeron en todo lo que pudieron para asegurar la calidad del trabajo. Comenzamos fotografiando sus platos. Nos levantamos temprano para aprovechar la luz del sol y el cielo despejado. Mientras nosotros preparábamos el atrezzo y el escenario, ellos iban preparando los menús. Encontramos un bonito tronco de madera y decidimos utilizarlo como columna base para los platos, y usamos un fondo blanco y un folio para iluminar y reflejar la comida lo mejor posible. Nos llevó dos días realizar estas fotografías, ya que sol iba y venía, ocultándose en ocasiones durante todo el día. Una vez que tuvimos las fotografías realizadas, comenzamos con el retoque de las mismas y el resto de materiales.

Because of this quality, the pressure was on. We have to give them in return something that was worth their hospitality. We decided to focus on not only the logo and web design, but on the product photography and extra details. We had thought it wise to show the look of the meals, as we have seen nothing alike in the whole Philippines.

Janice and her family were a delight to work with. We had commented our ideas. In a few minutes, her and the whole family put in their part to ensure the project's quality. Our first step was to begin the product shots. Early in the morning when the sun was up and shinning, the kitchen started preparing their special menus. In the meantime, we looked for attretso. We had found a beautiful log that would be used as a pillar to place the plates on. Using a white back drop, we ensured great light reflection to make the food stand out. It took us two days to complete this task, due to the sun coming and going, and eventually hiding for the rest of the day. Once that was done, we could continue with the rest of the material.

Janice se dio cuenta que estábamos trabajando duro e insistió en que tuviéramos más tiempo libre. ¿Qué "jefe" te anima a que te vayas a pasear? Aprovechamos nuestro tiempo para conocer mejor los alrededores, accesibles a pie y sin necesidad de guías para recorrerlos. Fuimos a ver los famosos "hanging coffins" (ataúdes colgantes) y disfrutamos durante innumerables ocasiones del Eco Valley, a 20 minutos del pueblo. Recorrimos el Marlboro Country, una estupenda caminata a hora y media de Sagada con imponentes paisajes de montaña. El Marlboro Country es conocido por sus caballos salvajes, aunque en este momento deben quedar únicamente 3 ó 4. La cascada de Sagada fue otro de nuestros lugares más visitados. Se encuentra muy cerca del pueblo, rodeada de terrazas de arroz, y en ocasiones visitada por niños y jóvenes del pueblo disfrutando de baños de agua fresca. Como os podéis imaginar, trabajar en The Log Cabin fue, además de interesante, inspirador y relajante gracias al tiempo libre que nos proporcionaron. 

But Janice, who had noticed we were working full steam ahead, had insisted that we take some time off. Amazed, we accepted and took our time to walk the valley and it's many sights accessible by foot and without need of a guide. During the time we worked we had time to visit (in many occasions) the famous hanging coffins and the eco valley (where we always had our lunch break in form of huge rations of pancit), Marlboro country (a beautiful little trek a few hours from the village absent of tourists), and the waterfall which we took up as one our favorite chill out spots, where we could relax, and swim in its cold water. As you can imagine, working in The Log Cabin, wasn't only professionally interesting, but very inspiring and relaxing thanks to the free time we were granted. 

Uno de los mejores momentos del día era la hora de la cena. Siempre nos sorprendían con alguna cerveza San Miguel bien fría, sabrosos platos y buenas raciones. El mejor día de la semana, el sábado, cuando el restaurante preparaba su famoso buffet, aprovechando el mercado del fin de semana. Este buffet era capaz de revivir a un muerto. Grandes cantidades de comida, toda ella exquisita. Por supuesto, había que reservar con antelación, y normalmente no quedaba un hueco libre.

One of our favorite moments of the day was dinner time. The restaurant would always surprise us with a great meal and an amazing ration. This moment would reach it's climax on Saturdays, when the restaurant had its famous weekend market buffet. This buffet could revive a dead man. Seriously. Endless amounts of food, with a different menu every weekend. We had ate several times with a friend of the family's who made sure to have enough money every month to eat at least twice at the buffet. This and the full restaurant showed us how good this buffet really was.

Durante este tiempo, realizamos la web, terminamos el retoque de las fotografías y preparamos un vídeo como presentación de la misma, diseñamos un nuevo menú, tarjetas de visita y rematamos el logotipo. Con todo ello, reforzamos la calidad y la elegancia del restaurante, diferenciándolo así de la competencia.

Una vez el trabajo estuvo terminado, le mostramos el resultado a Janice y a su familia. Todos se mostraron felices y contentos. 

We worked and ate away for a a few weeks. During the time we managed to create the website with its great looking pictures and introduction video, a new menu, business cards and their corporate ID. All the work created reenforced the quality and elegance of the food and the restaurant differentiating it from its competition.

Once our work was done, we showed Janice and the family the final outcome. They all acknowledged the work and were happy with all the pieces created.

Pero la última sorpresa estaba por venir. Cuando le dijimos a Janice que nuestro tiempo en Sagada había terminado, nos dimos cuenta que la Semana Santa se nos había echado encima, lo que significaba que todo Filipinas estaría de vacaciones, subidas de precios en el alojamiento y problemas de tráfico. Así que Janice nos dijo: "Habéis trabajado muy duro. ¿Por qué no os quedáis a pasar la Semana Santa en una casa que tenemos a dos minutos del pueblo? Es un lugar estupendo donde podréis descansar, divertiros y esperar a que la Semana Santa pase". ¿Podíamos pedir más hospitalidad por parte de esta familia? Por supuesto aceptamos encantados. A los dos días nos mudamos a la casa, de dos pisos con amplias terrazas y jardín, compartiéndola con un italiano muy peculiar que vivía allí por el momento. Janice también insistió en que siguiéramos yendo a The Log Cabin a cenar y al restaurante del St Joe a desayunar. ¡Vaya gozada! 

But we couldn't just leave without another amazing surprise. When we had told Janice that our time in Sagada seemed to have finished, we had noticed it was the beginning of the Holy week. This means full transport, overpriced lodging and a lot of chaos and festivity at the same time. Janice in her own words told us: " You guys have been working too hard, I think yo should stay for holy week in our home stay 2 minutes from the village. It's a great place and now you just need to relax, have some fun and enjoy the holy week". We were astonished with how far this family's hospitality reached. We accepted more than happily and later on retreated to our new home, which we shared with a peculiar Italian, from Calabria and Venice. This was a life time offer we couldn't miss. But when we thought our ties with The Log Cabin had "finished" Janice also insisted that we still come back for dinner every night. This couldn't get any better… or could it?
